Protecting Our Well Water

Sunday, October 5, at 7 PM
York Public Library

*Dr. Robert Marvinney, Director, Maine Geologic Survey.
*Gail Darrell, Director, New England Office of the Community Environmental Legal Defense.
*Patty Hymanson, York resident and physician will facilitate this event.

Dr. Marvinney and Ms. Darrell will talk about the origins of groundwater -- the water we drink -- and threats to the quality of our well water. Threats to our wells can include runoff from salted roads, fertilizer from golf courses, arsenic and other pollutants, and extraction of water for commercial use or sale.

Learn about what we can do to protect our wells from the effects of pollution and extraction.
Everyone is welcome. Refreshments served.

Shows will be on Saturday, April 19 at 2 pm at the Kittery Community Center and Sunday, May 4 at 7 pm at the York Public Library.

We will have a display of the types of reusable bags available on the market along with facts about the problems of plastic bag, recycling information, and handouts.

Launch of BYOB York 10/19/13

A merry band of SCANners greeted people at Marketfest in October to launch the start of a community initiative to encourage a reduction in plastic bag use in York. Free bags were given out to those who signed a pledge to break the bag habit. The initiative BYOB York website is full of information on the issues around plastic bags and information on 2014 events. Draw a Line Action Day 9/21/13

SCAN teamed up with 350 Maine for's Draw a Line Action Day. People from the York area and as far as Massachusetts joined in a protest against tar sands and the Keystone XL Pipeline outside of a TD Bank whose parent company is a major investor in TransCanada, owner of the pipeline.

Tar Sands Oil–Why it Matters to ME!

Thanks to everyone who joined us on May 28, 2013 for this talk and conversation about tar sands logo York Maine Bob Klotz, co-founder of 350 Maine, discussed the implications for Maine of a proposal to transport tar sands oil using the existing Portland pipeline.
